INTASC Standard: Professional Learning & Ethical Practice
The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts each practice to meet the needs of each learner.
Literacy Conference: Professional development and learning is essential to the growth of effective educators. As a developing teacher, I have opted to participate in as many opportunities for professional learning as possible. I attended the Spring 2022 Literacy Conference hosted by The Long Island Language Arts Council and Nassau Reading Council. The conference focused on literacy and ELA practices following COVID-19. I was able to attend two workshops highlighting Project-Based Learning and Readers' Theater. Both workshops proposed approaches to address the social-emotional deficits of students following the pandemic. These workshops were valuable to build up my toolbox of strategies to effectively engage all learners.
INTASC Standard: Leadership & Collaboration
The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession.
Meet the Teacher Sheet: While building relationships with students is of the utmost importance, the relationship between a teacher and the community should not be forgotten. Fostering relationships with student families can ensure family involvement in student growth. The first step to establishing these significant relationships is an introduction. The above image is a sheet meant to be shared with the families of incoming students. After introductions, relationships are maintained through frequent communication that highlights student successes as well as offers collaborative opportunities to help students flourish.
